Our Adopted Hungarian Festive Traditions - St Nicholas Day

Last night, as honorrarian Hungarians and hedging our yuletide bets, we followed our adopted festive tradition, along with young Krisztian across the hallway and Alice, by leaving our shoes outside, on what we hoped would be a magical night.

Real Hungarians leave their shoes on a window sill .......

....... but, as we can't actually reach ours, we thought the hedge outside would be the next best thing.

If we've been good all year Mikulas would hopefully leave sweets, chocolate and perhaps even a few nuts in our shoes,
but if we're found to be wanting in the goodness department Krampusz would instead put sticks in said shoes, as a warning (a bit like the cane).

Needless to say Nigel was up and out just as the festive cock (on the allotments up the road) began to crow, amidst a very tangible and palpable excitement .......

......... to be greeted with not a single stick in sight.

We'd all passed muster!  It was emotional, with all of us left feeling truly blessed in a real life, Hungarian way. It really is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, of a very Hungarian type nature.  What are we like?

It is excellent, to participate in traditions, with friends, like Kata, from other countries. I am delighted to see plenty of sweets, and no sticks - just as I would have suspected.

Mexico has a whole (heavenly?) host of traditions, too.

How wonderful te hear about other traditions & even better, be able to participate in them. You must have been exemplary all year to be rewarded with so much chocolate.
